Verizon And RedBox Partnership Plans For Early 2012 Launch

Verizon, a popular network carrier seems to be planning a Netflix competitor and is carrying out negotiations with various content producers to provide the streams and downloads. Some additional information has been gathered via some sources in this regard which makes it a bit more practical and must mostly facilitate some of concerns that were pointed out by critics and consumers yesterday.

According to one of the sources it was said that Verizon is in fact involving itself in making major contracts of partnership with RedBox that is said to have a aggresive business of $1 (now $1.20). DVD-rental kiosks has made it a major player in the content distribution game. By this coming May it is said that they are aiming to debut a TV movie streaming and download service. This service internally, is called Project Zoetrope. It will be a subscription, streaming, and downloading service for TV’s. Movies are available on a broad variety of platforms. They inturn support for iOS, Android, Google TV, Xbox, Roku and other streaming boxes, and browsers. This is by and large an internet service but not a broadcast service. ‘Set-top boxes’, so called traditional digital cable boxes are no longer supported by it at all.

It has an ability to stream in SD or HD to all of these devices. The local storage of video is enabled for mobile devices and tablets. For the time being, this won’t be a quick-release channel for new movies or live TV.  As it is still in talks with content providers, the release date, timings and blackouts will solely depend on their lead. According to them the release is planned for May 28th. But the beta version will be available in late April. The pricing is expected to be monthly and credit-based for instance it is about $5.95 per month for 6 credits, which could be used to rent X movies or Y shows.

Verizon has little to no branding in the on-demand movies and TV world but on the other hand, RedBox is immediately discerned for its simplicity and value. Ofcourse with a view to a deliver infrastructure front, Verizon seems to work a little more hard than RedBox that is already in the way of TV shows. This comes as an assurance to all the ones who had developed a bit skepticism in their minds towards such rumors.
