How to Use iMessage on iOS 5 Devices – iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

iMessage is a great new feature in iOS 5 which is launched recently this month. iMessage is a built-in app to let iOS 5 users to send messages to each other at absolutely free of cost. iMessage is nothing but an instant messenging solution for iOS 5 users. This app allows users to send Text and MMS messages via WiFi or 3G connections.

How to use iMessage to send messages using iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch?

Before you can use iMessage feature your device’s OS must be updated to iOS 5. If you are using iPhone 4S you will get the device with iOS 5 preloaded. But for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, iPad 2 and iPad you must upgrade to iOS 5 to be able to use iMessage.

Setup iMessage in iOS 5
Once the device is ready with iOS 5, the iMessage must be set up which is easy and quicker process. Setup process is same for any device(iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) compatible with iOS 5. Follow the steps below to setup iMessage on iOS 5

  • First tap on “Settings” and look for “Messages”
  • Now tap on “Messages” and look for “iMessage”
  • Now tap on “OFF” button on right side of iMessage option to turn it ON. If it is already ON just leave it.

iMessage Setup
Now iMessage will attempt to get your phone number and or Apple ID automatically. You can even setup these settings by tapping on options manually. Use the same Apple ID which is used to login to your iTunes or App Store. Dont you have an Apple ID? Then create one to enable iMessage by tapping on “Create New Account“. Once you have setup the Apple ID and or phone number on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch your device is ready to send and receive iMessages to and from any device using iMessage on iOS 5.

How to send a message using iMessage?

Just use the same “Messages” App button which is used to send SMS previously.

If you are sending a message to another iOS 5 user and iMessage is enabled on the device you can see the send button in Blue color. If the send button is in green color your device will send the message as SMS but not as iMessage.
